The Swiss leader has already confirmed his desire to stand for his fifth term. So Sepp Blatter’s tenure as FIFA president could last at least another four years. As a matter of fact, this decision is still controversial for the 77 year old Sepp Blatter.
“I’m a candidate again, my mandate has ended but my mission is not finished.”
In 1988, Sepp Blatter was first elected as FIFA president. That was another controversial circumstance. After his ascension to the most powerful seat in football, it was reported that $50,000 bribes were given to key figures in order to swing the vote.
Again corruption was suggested by FIFA general secretary Michel Zen-Ruffinen in 2002. Former African Confederation vice-president Farah Addo claimed for another reinforcement of $100,000 for his vote.
Many more problems appeared throughout Sepp Blatter years as president. Financial mismanagement and corruption were always with him. He was also made headlines a couple of times for airing a string of narrow-minded opinions.
Probably the most famous thing about Sepp Blatter is his suggestion for the female footballers wear. He suggested “tighter” shorts for them to attract greater male audience.
“Let the women play in more feminine clothes like they do in volleyball. Female players are pretty and they already have some different rules to men – such as playing with a lighter ball”
“That decision was taken to create a more female aesthetic, so why not do it in fashion?”
Another remarkable comment is about the homosexuals. He expected them to refrain from any sexual activities after awarding the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.
The acceptance of goal-line technology is one of the changes he made since the last election. Though it was a long overdue. But the ageing boss originally opposed it. Actually it was successfully deployed in the Premier League campaign.
Selection rivals for Sepp Blatter are yet to be announced. BBC Sport suggests vice-president Jeffrey Webb and former deputy general secretary Jerome Champagne for the post. But they both have said that they will not oppose Blatter.
16 years is already a long time for one man to instill his beliefs in football. He could potentially make it two decades much to the dismay of many. At this era of social media interaction, truly it is surprising to see a younger candidate hasn’t been utilized for the sake of world football.
Sepp Blatter is said to have the backing of African, American and Asian confederations. This could definitely irk many football fans as they don’t have any say in selecting the FIFA president.
It is expected that he will continue mixing up things again. he has proven himself unafraid of expanding football’s reach. Sepp Blatter actually likes to highlight the Qatar World Cup and will likely continue this ethos heading into his next session.
