Radwanska’s shock exit in Roland Garros, Paris

Croatia’s Ajla Tomljanovic made history in the French Open by knocking out the third seed Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 6-4 in the third round. This defeat meant that the French Open’s all top seeds had been ousted inside six days, with top seed Serena William losing in the second round and second seed Li Na departing in the first round.

Improving from world ranking 495 to 78, she makes herself the biggest ranking improvement by any player in the top 100.

This year, she lost in the third round at the Australian Open but more recently failed to qualify for the draw at Madrid and Rome in the buildup to Roland Garros.

On the other hand, it was the first time for Radwanska as she had failed to make it past the third round at a grand slam since the Frence open 2012. Last year at Wimbledon, she ended up as semi-finalist, quarter-finalist at Australian Open and French Opens and at the US open she made the fourth round.

This year French Open has become remarkable being the first Grand Slam in the open era where the top three players all failed to make the last 16. In this French Open, fourth seed Romanian Simona Halep is the top seeded player left in the draw, having reached the third round on Thursday.

Russian Maria Sharapova, the seventh seed dodged the debris to inflict a 6-0, 6-0 thrashing on hapless Argentine Paula Ormechea. Sharapova won 54 points to 17 for her opponent with the South American taking just three points in the second set.

In men’s side second seed Novak Djokovic made his fourth round with a tough 6-3,6-2,6-7,6-4 win over Croatia’s Marin Cilic. The 2012 runner-up, Djokovic next faces either French Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz for a place in the quarter-finals.

Roger Federer, the 2009 champion and the fourth seeded player defeated Russia’s Dmitry Tursunov with a 7-5, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 win and reached the last 16.

Roger Federer will face Ernests Gulbis of Latvia for a place in the quarterfinals.

Rafael Nadal wins his first European clay title of the season

Another European clay title for Rafael Nadal. This the first of the season for him. And the 27th Masters Tournament victory of his career at the Madrid Open.

European clay title in Madrid:

His opponent Kei Nishikori was forced to retire through injury. Before that, Nadal had won seven straight games to lead 3-0 in the third set. Then the match was halted having lost the first set 6-2. And then it came for a break down to win the second 6-4.

Previously Nishikori was struggling with a back spasm. In Saturday’s dramatic semifinal victory over David Ferrer, he was badly injured. But he couldn’t understand this can haunt back again on Sunday game time.

He must be disappointed after losing his first European clay title in such an unfortunate manner. But still the Japanese can take comfort from his performances this week. As this is bringing him to the world top 10 for the first time. Probably in the latest ranking of Monday.

At the clay court in Madrid, Nishikori out-played Nadal for a set and a half with some aggressive shots. Some of them were big winners for him too.

It was clear after the trainer was called on seven games into the second set, that Nishikori‘s movement was inhibited. Rafael Nadal capitalized to break twice and level the match at a set apiece.

Probably the third set was an anti-climax. Rafael was easing ahead of his injured opponent before Nishikori decided he couldn’t continue any more of this game.

“I am very disappointed about what happened today in this final”

Said Nishikori after the match.

He acknowledged that the final was quite unfortunate for him. He tried his level best with being hurt. But after the game he congratulated Nadal as he believes that his opponent played too good. And so, Nadal was gracious in victory with the European clay title.

Rafael Nadal also felt sorry for his opponent. He knew well about the tough job against his opponent as he previously met him in London at the ATP World Tour.

“Winning at home is always more special than winning anywhere. To play in front of your home crowd… is unforgettable for me”

He added.

Sharapova rebounds back:

Maria Sharapova recovered from a horrendous start to defeat Romania’s Simona Halep 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 to claim the women’s title ( European clay title ).

She had previously lost the first four games of the match to the World No. 5. As a matter of fact she conceded the first set in less than half-an-hour.

The Russian turned things around as the game progressed. And now she wins seven of her last nine titles on a clay court.

The 27 year old, after the match said,

“Last year I lost in the finals and I really wanted to go one extra step this year.it has just been a fantastic week”

She believes that her opponent is now at another different level. It is clear from her come back from 64th position to number five in less than a year. So she is happy with the way she pulled it off.

Novak Djokovic Returns to Top of Tennis World

With the victory beating Roger Federer in a five-set thriller in Wimbledon, the Serb, Novak Djokovic took the no 1 ranking back from Rafael Nadal. It was his second Wimbledon title and his seventh major overall.

Novak Djokovic vs Roger Federer, most importantly the match was tough enough to hold the nerve. Djokovic overcame the uncertainties with a hard win of 6-7,6-4,7-6,5-7,6-4 and three hours and 56 minutes match.

Before this astonishing win, Djokovic had lost his last three major finals and hadn’t won a Slam since 2013 Australian Open. May be that was the key to his success. There is no doubt about his excellence. He was making finals and winning smaller titles, which made him a great player still. But like all other greats, at the most important times in the biggest matches, Djokovic was caving.

grass court, wimbledon, djokovic

On Wimbledon final, for a while it looked like that pattern will continue.

During this crucial final, Djokovic found himself surrendering leads again and again to in-form Federer. At the beginning, he was up two sets to one and had even a 5-2 lead in the fourth set. But he couldn’t hold on his standing. He always remains so vulnerable at Federer’s serve as Djokovic lost five consecutive games and failed to convert one championship point on that.

But it was Novak Djokovic who refused to fold and finally won the title.

Now, get a look of his rising. With his impeccable 2011 season, Djokovic created monster for himself. He entered 2011 Australian open with only one Slam in his name. but at the end of that year he packed a Wimbledon title, U.S Open crown, another Australian open win and the NO. 1 ranking.

djokovic, australian open, grand slam
Djokovic in Australian Open—-image via: www.dailymail.co.uk

That year he won his first 41 matches before the defeat came in French open semifinals again Roger Federer.

Since then, remaining towards the top of the game he added a third and fourth Australian Open title, but he hasn’t been able to recapture his 2011 performances. Nadal beat him three Slam finals, Murrey beat him two Slam finals and most notably he looked lost and frustrated in the biggest matches.

But Djokovic never gave up despite all these high profile losses.

He was toiling hard to make him perfect.

At the beginning of this year the great Boris Becker joined his team to get him some mental edge for achieving the ultimate goal. But it didn’t seem to pay off quickly as Djokovic lost in the quarterfinals of the Australian open to Stan Wawrinka and in the French open final to Rafael Nadal.

Now, let’s get back to the Wimbledon final, this year and it was against seven-time Wimbledon Champion Roger Federer and the score was 2-2. In the final set, Novak Djokovic showed his talents, he showed he can beat the champion. He finally converted his championship point.

Djokovic’s dream came true——image via: max-balkanboy.blogspot.com

He lifted his arms to the heavens, swiftly jogged to the net to embrace Federer and then kneeled down to taste the Wimbledon’s sweet grass!

Then he ran to his box embrace his team and also Boris Becker. Their partnership had paid off at last.

After winning the title Djokovic told the press,

“I realized, you know, what I’ve been through mentally to get through to this point.”

For now Djokovic has once again put himself at the top of the tennis world. He didn’t need to play his best for this to prove that he is the best.

Former eight- time champion Rafael Nadal was set to take on tireless 32 year-old David Ferrer In an all Spanish quarterfinal at the Monte Carlo Masters.

World number one ended up the Monte Carlo Masters after a straight-sets quarter-final defeat by the last generation Spaniard David Ferrer. The 14-time Grand Slam champion capitulated in a first-set tie break and dropped his serve in the second to lose 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 to the sixth-seed.

Ferrer won against Nadal for the first time on clay in a decade. He said:

“I have had to wait 10 years to defeat him on clay. After a very long time I’m happy with the win and the way it was played.”

Rafa could be considered an absolute beast on the dirt and despite all the endeavors of players like Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, no one has ever been successful to defeat the King on the clay surface. Previously Nadal had always completely dominated David Ferrer whenever the two met.

His lead of 21-5 represents how well he plays against the 32 year-old and that’s much like many of his other rivals.

After being defeated with 44 unbelievable mistakes Nadal said:

“When your opponent is doing things better than you, the normal thing is to lose. All losses feel bad, but especially on clay. I’m not happy with how I’m playing.”

Nadal has a record of losing only 21 matches out of 321. These 300 wins have seen him winning 43 titles and out of which eight have come from the clay. But Ferrer has always been making a career out of overcoming the odds. After all in all the game seemed one of the most fascinating duel between the two Spaniard greats.

After winning all four grand slams, Sharapova is desperate to get the three successive wins in the stuttgart WTA 2014.

If the Russian wins she will get an extra bonus point as if she would fail to win against Radwanska we would have seen her falling out of the top ten for the first time in the three years.

Prize Money Comparison with Maria Sharapova:

Though we all know Sharapova is sky high while comparing endorsement earnings in particular year. In 2014 Williams made $11 million in endorsements while Sharapova earned $22 million in endorsements alone. Sharapova’s good looks are thought to be part the reason. In fact Tennis is just not as popular as sports like football and baseball in the United States.

But Serena Williams has 21 Grand Slams titles, which is four times as much as Sharapova’s five titles. So Williams’ on-court record and money can easily shatter Sharapova.

Clothing Line at New York Fashion Week:

Serena Williams started playing tennis with her sister Venus Williams at the age of three. The Williams sisters are also known for being fashion icons in states. Both have their own fashion lines. While Serena Williams introduced new additions to her line Signature Statement at New York Fashion Week last year.

It was shortly after losing the U.S. Open semifinals, clearly determines, she didn’t let the loss get her down and showed what she can do in the fashion world on the go.

“It’s been keeping me busy and keeping me happy because I love fashion”

Her line basically features casual pants, skirts, leggings, dresses, cardigans, shirts and sweatshirts. This is the second time her line has been featured at New York Fashion event.

Her sister, Venus, also has an interest in fashion. She also has her own athletic clothing line, namely EleVen. This brand also features everything from tennis skirts to sports bras. According to Venus herself –

“Get people moving, healthy and feeling damn good about how they look and feel”

Stake in the Miami Dolphins with Venus Williams:

Williams’ sisters bought a stake in the Miami Dolphins in 2009. That means they are limited ownership partners. More interestingly Jennifer Lopez and Gloria Estefan are also stakeholders with the Dolphins. But there is a slight difference in this case. Serena and Venus are the first African American females to have ownership in a NFL franchise.

Previously they were living in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. In fact they have grown up in the area and were been Miami fans for long time. Serena told –

“I am so excited to be part of such a renowned organization. Having spent so much of my childhood in the area, being involved with a staple of Miami culture is a huge honor”

But, remember, this isn’t just a business transaction. Both the Williams are contributing to history by setting the tone for entrepreneurship in the black community. As Mike Dee (Chief Executive Officer of the Miami Dolphins) said –

“We are focused on diversifying our fan base and broadening our reach. Having these high profile celebrities owning some of the team will help us get more people to the games”

5 Year, $40 Million Contract with Nike:

Counting on Serena Williams net worth 2016, here it’s the big deal. Nike’s hefty contract with Williams benefits both parties. She has been guaranteed Nike’s endorsement for five years to the tune of $40 million.

Obviously Nike expects that the deal will up its presence in the women’s athletic-apparel market. This contract will probably also include sales royalties and performance incentives.

Some of Williams’ other endorsement worth mentioning include Gatorade. Part of Gatorade’s ‘Serena 21’ art series campaign, they made a mural that features several depictions of Serena along with tennis symbols and quotes to commemorate different milestones in her career before the US Open Last year. There are 21 paintings altogether that make the larger mural come to life.

New Home in Palm Beach Gardens – Cost $2.5 Million:

Serena Williams’ newly built Florida home in Palm Beach Gardens had a large price tag of $2.5 million. The 1.25 acre new home comes with a feature of pool, spa and a canal running behind.

Of course Serena has other property as well. She has got a 2.4 acre property in Jupiter, which was bought in 2014 for just over $4 million. But the Williams’ sister mansion is larger than any other (10,000 square feet).

Serena Williams vs Maria Sharapova: Who’s Worth more?

From such a wealth of success, Serena Williams has collected a fair amount of prize money along the way. That puts her first on the all-time list of female tennis players and fourth on the all-time list of both men and women.

Serena Williams vs Maria Sharapova
2014 WTA Finals | image credit credit – Wikimedia/Eng T Tan

In comparison with that unbelievable height, Maria Sharapova’s tennis career is a blundering failure. Only five Grand Slam titles and a single Olympic Silver can never compete I should say. That success, has raked in a “piffling” $34.9 million earnings, pretty much half that won by the younger American Tennis star. Undoubtedly Serena Williams is considerably richer than her Russian rival.

But Maria Sharapova is nothing short of a money-making machine. Outside the court, she has endorsements with the likes of Porsche, Tag Heuer and Evian. These altogether definitely pay her almost twice what Wilson contribute in Serena Williams net worth.

On Friday, the worlds no. one had to battle past Andy Murray in three sets. The Bulgarian opponent was lighter enough for him to win through straight sets 6-2 6-2 in just over an hour and 20 minutes.

Nadal said

“I played a solid match and was very good with my backhand,”

Reported by ATPWorldTour.com.

From his speech, it was clear that he was happy playing a great match. And he is expecting a lot of positive things about the Rome Masters final. Nadal thinks that match as a good confirmation of playing better with the forehand flying and top spins.

It will be the eighth crown for the Spaniard in the Italian capital. On the contrary it was a slightly more circuitous route for his Serb adversary as to play the fifth Rome Masters final.

But definitely Novak Djokovic is the world’s no. two right now. At the past game, he was out on court nearly three hours against Canada’s Milos Raonic. But he prevailed eventually in three sets 6-7 (7/5) 7-6 (7/4) 6-3.

Djokovic said

“It was a big win, it gives me a lot of strength and belief that I hope I can carry into tomorrow’s final and the rest of the season”

Via ATPWorldTour.com.

He felt the opponent playing at high level. Especially his serve totally made him helpless. After the game Djokovic told that he couldn’t really read the serve.

Sara Errani is through to Sunday’s final, over in the women’s draw.

World no. 11, Errani is going to be the first Italian winner since Raffaella Reggi triumphed in 1985.

But as a matter of fact she will face the world no. one Serena Williams in the final. Serena needed three sets (6-1 3-6 6-1) to see off her opponent Ana Ivanovic.

William is looking to clinch a third title in Rome. The American has a 6-0 record against Errani in Dubai. But she doesn’t want to underestimate her opponent for the final.

Williams said of Errani

“I think she has improved immensely in the just the last two weeks”

Reported by WTATennis.com

Errani has taken her game to another level. She must be having a lot of confidence having beaten two really good Top 10 players. And William needs to do a lot of work to beat her as everyone believes Errani has nothing to lose.

Rafael Nadal Dominates the French Open (Grand Slam tennis tournament)

Rafael Nadal Dominates the French Open,Rafael Nadal news
Rafael Nadal ; image credit www.flickr.com

No one has ever before dominated the French Open (a Grand Slam tennis tournament) like Rafael Nadal. He has an unmatched numbers of titles at the French Open.

Another record that reflects his talent is the 59-1. Looking at the 60 matches we can easily understand how he tips the balance in his favor.

Rafael Nadal opened his latest title defense Monday against Robby Ginepri of the United States. He has played 11,485 points at the French Open in nine years. All these points has significance beyond the win-and-loss column.

French Open, Rafael Nadal
King of the Clay-Court ; image credit ar.wikipedia.org

Nadal’s set and match percentages are overwhelming. Things are a lot closer on the level of games and points. Rafael Nadal has had such remarkable success at the French Open. He did this while remaining so close to a 50-50 battle in points won.

All the statistics of tennis show that each year the number one player in the world typically wins about 55 percent of all the points he plays. Particularly for that very season. So we can always say that every point matters.

Rafael Nadal has spent a total of 150.7 hours on court at the French Open since 2005. He has always been torturing the opponents with heavy topspin and controlling the flow of each match.

It looks like he has his opponent on a yo-yo. Unbelievably he been stretched to play a fifth set for only two times. Against John Isner and in last year’s semifinal victory over Novak Djokovic.

Rafael Nadal at the French Open Won-Lost Percentage of Winning
Matches Won 59-1 98.3%
Sets Won 177-19 90.3%
Games Won 1169-635 64.8%
Points Won 6465-4920 56.7%

Serve:

Rafael Nadal has served 177 aces and 83 double faults in nine years. This is actually splendid performance for a better than 2-to-1 ratio in this critical first-strike area. He never did serve more than four double faults in a match. Only once did he reach double figures (10) in aces.

May be these numbers can suggest a heavy aversion to risk. Strongest thing about Nadal’s service games is getting his first serve in. he does this almost 71.1 percent of the time at the French Open. It can be considered extremely tough to break him as he wins 71.3 percent of first-serve points and 57.7 percent of second serves.

French Open Winners

Break Point opportunities:

Another thing matters most for Rafael Nadal at the French Open is break-point opportunities. Converting 50 percent of his break points, is a great advantage for him. Which is 5 percent higher than his career average. While opponents could only convert 30 percent of their break points against him.

All Serves Percentage of Winning
1st Serve 71.1%
2nd Serve 57.7%
Opponent’s 2nd Serve 57.6%
Opponent’s 1st Serve 40.2%

Combining all the eight finals, Rafael Nadal’s opponents converted only 25 percent of the break points. For the first five of those finals the conversion rate was only 15 percent. Which is ridiculously low.

French Open 2014, Rafael Nadal biography

Returning Serve:

May be returning Serve is the arm by which the King of Clay hurts opponents the most. Surprisingly Rafael Nadal wins 40.2 percent of opponent’s first-serve points and 57.6 percent of their second-serve points. This can effectively mean that he has three serves for the match and his opponents have one only.

In the last nine years Nadal has won 67.4 percent of all points serving and 47.1 percent of his return points as well.

Unlike any other year he has lost more at the clay-court lead-in events in Monte Carlo and Barcelona. It is said that Rafael Nadal grows a foot taller when he walks onto Court Philippe Chatrier. He has already proven himself almost impossible by slaying clay’s greatest gladiator in that arena.
