Top 10 overrated football players in the world

These players adore adulation and they demand respects. They possibly earn more money in 1 year only by playing football than 99% of adults make it in a lifetime job. Not only that, they have appeared in different products ads, pouted for photo shoots and have given a big thumps up as a part of endorsement deals. They grab supermodel girlfriends, 25 bedroom mansions and even Lamborghini supercars. But the question is “are they really that good?”

Today Sporty ghost brings you the list of top 10 overrated football players in the world. As the list is completely subjective, you people may vehemently disagree and nail a picture of me to your dartboard for simple target practice. Now I think it’s time someone stood up for these players and told them what they really are the top 10 overrated football players in the world.

Top 10 overrated football players in the world:

10. Cristiano Ronaldo

Nicknames: “A Complete Brat”, “The Winker”

Cristiano Ronaldo has earned his enormous popularity throughout the world. He has got numerous fans worldwide. He is undoubtedly a football genius, a skilled footballer. During his staying in Manchester united, he scored stunning 42 goals in a single season and now for Real Madrid, he is still scoring like a goal machine!

cristiano ronaldo, overrated football players, top 10 overrated football players, ronaldo record, cristiano ronaldo record
Cristiano Ronaldo———image via: www.flickr.com

Cristiano has lifted every single major piece of silverware in England by the age of 24 (aside Champions league, just for that time period). He has nominated as 2 times PFA player and player of the year for 1 time. Possibly, he deserves more than these.

To the Portuguese side, he is the perfect heir of Luis Figo and he is on course to have an even more legendary career.

You may ask, why C. Ronaldo in the list of top 10 overrated football players in the world? Is it because he is a brat? Perhaps his mind blowing diving and free kicks from inside his own half and all round meat-headedness becoming annoying after a while. But quite simply the reason is CR7 won both the FIFA Ballon D’or and FIFA World player and the great Lionel Messi did not.

If Cristiano Ronaldo is rated as the best player in the world over Lionel Messi, by definition he is overrated, but obviously by the highest standards available.

9. Petr Cech

Nickname: “The best goalie this side of Buffon”

Petr Cech may be suffering from ‘Edwin Van Der Sar’ syndrome throughout his Chelsea career, but his outstanding clean sheet and defensive record have made him exceptional than others. This could be attributed to a well-organized and disciplined defense as opposed to any indivigual brilliance on his part.

petr cech, overrated football players, top 10 overrated football players, top 10 football players 2012, professional football players
Petr Cech——image via: caps.ball72.com

However, unlike Van Der Sar, Petr Cech has been consistently hailed as the best goalie this side of Buffon. Petr Cech, the 3 times winner of UEFA’s best goal keeper award winner, is the guy playing in goal for Czech Republic with a far poorer defense side.

In fact since his career ending devastating head injury, Cech has begun to look as a shadow of his former self. Unfortunately, he lost the aggressiveness and psychological edge that a world-class goal keeper needs to.

It is apparent that, Petr Cech is unlike most people on this list of top 10 overrated football players in the world. Rather he is a humble and decent man. Let’s hope he can come back and regain the confidence that would made him the most overrated football player in the world.

8. Lucas Podolski

Nicknames: “Poldi”, “The Scourge of Faroe Islands”,”The conqueror of Liechtenstein”

Lucas Podolski, the German ‘noob basher’ is merciless when it comes to taking advantage of weaker opponents but will promptly take out the autograph notebook against strong to world class opponents.

In fact, even in Bayern GM Uli Hoeness, he is also known as a noob basher. The reason may be the crown prince of German football was appeared as a failure in his 3 sessions there!

Podolski’s goal scoring record would make an uninformed observer believe he is a class of football.

In fact even Bayern GM Uli Hoeness was moved to call him a noob basher, citing this as the reason the crown prince of German football was a failure in his 3 seasons there.

Also read: Top 10 highest paid footballers in the English Premier League

Although Podolski was eligible to play for Poland and Germany, he chose to play for the Germans. He first appeared for the German National Team in 2004 and since then he has been an integral part of the squad in all major tournaments. He is the joint fifth –highest goalscorer for Germany, with 47 goals and tied with Rudi Voller and Jurgen Klinsmann.

The 2006 FIFA World Cup best young player and 2008 UEFA Euro silver boot winner, Lucas Podolski is indeed one of the overrated football players in the world.

7. Ronaldinho

Nickname: “The fleet-footed platypus”

Ronaldinho’s glittering career leading up to his horrible decline after 2006 World Cup. The thing what isn’t well documented is why Adriano Gailliani paid €21 million for a clearly past it player.

Also read: top 10 most popular sports in the world

Nowadays most Brazillians have a notorious self-destruction mode when it comes to careers and the great Ronaldinho is no exception. But Ronaldinho is living on past memories as most top earning footballers and despite a Bronze medel at the last olympics, few could be certain he will add significantly to his previous haul over the upcoming years.

6. Andrea Pirlo

Commonly known as “ the poster boy of everything good and bad and ugly about italian serie A”

When serie A and Italian football is on top of the world inevitably, Andea Pirlo gets a nod in the FIFA World Player or FIFA Ballon D’or running. Moreover, when Serie A is in the toilet, likewise Pirlo’s reputation suffers. Do you wanna know why? The reason is, Pirlo impersonates a lot of the characteristics of Italian Serie A.

Pirlo is languid, slow, positioned defensively and while some parts of his game, like long passing and set pieces are top class, every other part of his game ranges from mediocore to even rubbish. He even plays for a football club that has a typical Italian attitude.

pirlo, overrated football players, top 10 overrated football players, top 10 football players 2012
Andrea Pirlo————-image via: www.flickr.com

From a technical point of view,Pirlo, like Carrick for Manchester United and Xabi Alonso for Liverpool FC, is lacking in the close quarters technique that any complete midfielder should have. May be he lacks some qualities to navigate and create space in the middle of the park for his team. This possibly means one must have a bulldog like Gattuso beside Pirlo or a magician like Ricardo Kaka further up the pitch to make up for what should be provided in one player.

Thus Andrea Pirlo stoutly maintains himself 20 yards back from the battle in front of the back four, rarely busting a gut to get into the opponent’s box.

Also read: Top 10 all time football legends

When Carlo Ancelotti pushed him further back on the pitch after Inter Milan sold him, he did it because it was a recognition of his weakness, not his strength.

Unlike Carrick who gets hardly any recognition and Xabi Alonso, who gets the recognition he deserves, Pirlo gets much more than these two. And thus he made himself one of the overrated football players in the world.

5. Klass Jaan Huntelaar

Nickname: “ The Hunter”

Dutch league top scorers are notoriously inept outside of Netherlands. Dutch footballers like Dirk Kuyt, Mateja Kezman and Middlesborough’s Alfonso’s 45 goals in 39 games in the Eredivisie’ Alves are most remarkable. Today all of them are more or less suck.

huntelaar, overrated football players, top 10 overrated football players, top 10 football players 2012
Huntelaar, “The Hunter”————–image via: sk.wikipedia.org

Why I think Klaas Jaan Huntelaar is particularly one of the overrated football players is simply down to his general abilities in open play. He’s very awkward and despite8/14 in Spain so far I still think the jury board is out until next session. Is Huntelaar the new Marco Van Basten? The technical abilities seems little lacking.

Also read: Top 10 most handsome footballers in the world 2014

Apparently, Huntelaar is the only Dutchman, Perez is willing to keep on at the club level. But the omens don’t look good at all, for one he was signed by Predrag Mijatovic and more succinctly he, like Lucas Podolski, looks a bit like a noob basher. As a Dutch international footballer, just about the biggest team he has scored against is Ireland.

4. Adriano

Nicknames: “The booty Basher”, “The Emperor”

For a man that seems lot like he wouldn’t have looked out of place on the set of classic Brazilian movie “City of God” or been one of my sisters former boyfriend, you’d think he would be happier being a multi-million Euro earning professional soccer player in a successful team under the world’s best coach.

adriano, overrated football players, top 10 overrated football players, top 10 football players 2012, professional football players, national football players
Adriano———–image via: www.sambafoot.com

Not so as it seems.

Adriano was being hailed as the best just 3-4 seasons ago. Like his another teammate Ronaldinho, the world cup was to prove ominous and like any other self-respecting-big-shot Brazilian footballer, he took up his bag and went home for a Party.

Also read: Top 10 English Premier League rivalries

Adriano is simply among the overrated football players in the world. But unlike some of the others in the list, not because he lacks the talent but for he doesn’t show up to games anymore.

3. Dimitar Berbatov

Nicknames: “Berby-Werby”, “The Bulgarian Hitman”

His footballing style has been praised and criticized in equal amounts and rarely does a footballer seem to divide supporters of his current club as Berba does. Even Alex Ferguson had his doubts in Berbatov.

overrated football players, top 10 overrated football players, top 10 football players 2012, professional football players, national football players
Dimitar Berbatov——————image via: www.guncel61.com

His club records for Bayer Leverkusen, CSKA Sofia, and Tottenham Hotspur have been top notch and his technical skill and class have been so obvious all throughout his career.

It is quite unbelievable, that even his own countrymen have a mixed (both love and hate) relationship with him. Berbatov was voted 5 times Bulgarian player of the year and has a boasting 41/67 record for Bulgaria National team. But he has recently been indefinitely exiled from the squad due to perceived lack of effort.

And that’s where all the trouble begin…..

Was Berbatov really fit to lead Manchester United frontline? It seems the answer was ‘only if he wanted to..

Also read: Top 10 French footballers of all time

When one takes into account an honest workhorse like Tevez, who rightly feels aggrieved at losing his place, its hard to fathom how Ferguson hasn’t thrown a boot at him.

The warning signs were always there. Quite simply Berbatov looks thoroughly disinterested in the game nowadays, and that’s even taking his notorious style into account. But, one thing for sure as much as I rate Berbatov, when he is on song, he is at this stage one of the flops of the season and if he keeps up his behavior it could become feather of him before too long.

2. Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Nickname: “Ibracadabra”

ibrahimovic, overrated football players, top 10 overrated football players, top 10 football players 2012, professional football players, national football players
Zlatan Ibrahimovic———–image via: www.khelnama.com

As one of the two best paid footballers in the world, Ibrahimovic has been constantly touted by those in Serie A as the “complete forward” and by Jose Mourinho as simply the best. His goal records against England, Spain and Italy take into account suggesting as a serious noob basher material.

Although Ibra won Serie A’s footballer of the year, one really has to ask who he is up against nowadays.

Also read: 10 unknown facts about Lionel Messi

At the age 27, time is running out for Ibrahimovic to prove he has something else in the secret locker. Man like Jose Mourinho has apparently seen in him things I haven’t found so far. His outstanding performances in the Champions League unfortunately have done nothing to dispel my view that every brace or hat-trick against the likes of Lecce or Atlanta is roughly the equivalent of ½ a goal in the Champions league.

Right now, Zlatan is somebody that give noob bashers a bad name. He made his name in this list of top 10 overrated football players in the world quite simply.

1. David Beckham

Nicknames: “Becks”, “A nice guy”,”Golden balls”

Before some people throw their hands up in disgust and decide to attach my picture to a dartboard, I just want you to know that I genuinely think he’s a great footballer to be overrated. Nobody will forget his performances in the champions league quarter-final involving Real Madrid and Manchester United.

beckham, overrated football players, top 10 overrated football players, top 10 football players 2012, professional football players, national football players
David Beckham——–image via: retireloaded.com

Beckham is always a humble, decent and professional guy with a childlike fascination with representing England. He is certainly NOT the worst guy you could meet on this list of top 10 overrated football players in the world.

But, Beckham is always something else. Everytime I think of Becks, I heard the scream of Japanese teenage girls in airports…..that awesome Bend it like Beckham movie…the Vogue magazine cover….the ridiculous €250 million deal to sell t-shirts…the list goes on and nothing on it has anything to do with the game that made him famous!

David Beckham has become such a phenomenon off the pitch, that people would think he really was a movie or a popstar. As he is the most well-known footballer arguably, no footballer’s face is as instantly recognizable anywhere in this free world.

Also read: 7 amazing facts about Cristiano Ronaldo

But all these have nothing to do with his stunning footballing ability. It should come as no surprise that much of the demand for David Beckham from clubs since he was sold by a despairing Alex Ferguson.

I’m kind of disappointed that the world’s best sport will forever be associated with Beckham for hundreds of millions of football fans that don’t know much about it. If David Beckham was the man to finally make soccer big in USA, I can only imagine most of the newly acquired football fans there would surely have been getting into football for the wrong reasons.

10 unknown facts about Lionel Messi

In recent Era of Football, Lionel Messi is arguably the best footballer in the world. Often he is compared to the legends like Pele and Diego Maradona and it won’t be a surprise if Messi overtakes them soon. He has become the most popular football figure in world football. Being a legend is not easy and there always goes something behind it. Here we are to bring you 10 unknown facts about the legend Lionel Messi.

10 unknown facts about Lionel Messi:

1. The birth of a star:

lionel messi childhood, messi, leo, little messi
The little Leo———image via: ejsoccer.com

Lionel Messi was born on June 24, 1987 in Rosario, Argentina and it’s the birthplace of Argentinian revolutionary Che Guevera. His family is of middle class with Italian origin. His father, Jorge worked as a steelworker to make living. But the football gene was within him as he also coached local youth football team.

2. The rough childhood:

Like the other boys around, he was not as healthy and nutritious. Messi was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency at the age of 11. His treatment cost was $900 a month, which is not affordable for his middle class family.

3. The contract:

Messi’s passion for football was never stopped. He was so skillful from his very childhood with football like he is today. FC Barcelona’s sporting director Carles Rexach was so impressed watching his footballing skills that he made Messi at the age of 13, signed for Barcelona on a napkin paper! He wanted to make the deal immediately and at that time there was no paper available on that place. Meanwhile Barcelona took the responsibility to pay his medical bills.

4. At Barcelona:

Messi made his league debut at the age of 17 against RCD Espanyol and became the third youngest player ever to play for Barcelona. That’s not all. He made himself the youngest player ever for Barcelona to score.

During 2005/06 season, Lionel Messi began being paid as a first team member in Barcelona. In his Spanish first division League appearance, he scored six goals in 17 matches.

In the summer 2008, Messi inherited No 10 Barca jersey from another great footballer Ronaldinho.

5. His achievements:

Lionel Messi is an Olympic gold medalist in 2008, Beijing along with Argentina football team. For Barcelona he has won six La Ligas, two copas Del Rey, five Supercups, three UEFA Champions Leagues, two Club World Cups and two UEFA Super Cups.

He won record four times FIFA Ballon d’Or in 2009,10,11 and 2012. In 2009, Messi was awarded FIFA World Player of the Year. He also won three European Golden shoe awards.

Messi has become the only player to have scored 25 goals in a calendar year both for his club and his country.

6. His humanitarian activities:

He is the Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF for many years. Messi also works for the people suffering from autism. On March 2013, he donated $812,000 towards the refurbishment of a children’s hospital in his hometown Rosario, Argentina. The child oncology unit at that hospital was renovated with that money. The money was also paying for doctors to travel to Barcelona for better training.

7. His comparisons to legend

Lionel Messi’s stature and playing style have drawn comparisons to the Argentine legend Diego Maradona. Maradona has already declared Messi as his successor. But it was lionel Messi as the first Argentine ever to be named FIFA Player of the year, NOT Maradona! However, the award was created in 1991 and at that point the downfall of Maradona had begun after he picked the World Cup in 1986.

8. His family, his son:

thiago messi, messi's son, messi's family
The sweet family——–image via: wallpaperbarcelona.com

His son Thiago Messi was born on November 2, 2012. Thiago is already an official member of the Newell’s old Boys’ supporters club at the age of 72 hours!

Messi loves this kid so much that he tattooed Thiago’s name and handprints on his left calf. Messi spends most of his pastimes playing with Thiago and his wife Antonella Roccuzzo.

9. He is modest:

Lionel Messi has been a very shy person right from his childhood. This trait of his character continues to until even now. Apparently, he rarely talks on the phone. The most important messages delivered to him and received by him take place through SMS.

10. His goal celebration:

lionel messi, messi's goal celebration, messi's goal
Messi’s goal celebration————image via: www.sepakbola.com

We saw him raising both hands in the air after scoring a goal as a part of his celebration. This gesture is to pay tribute and thanks to his grandmother who were very much close to him. He lost his grandma at the age of 10. He always believes she is up there and watching him from above. That’s his way of showing that he would always be grateful to her.

10. American Football

Approximated number of fans: 400 million

Regional popularity: Europe, Africa, Asia, America, Australia

In other words this game is commonly referred as the national obsession of millions of Americans. Most probably these millions have propelled the sport into the most popular sports in the US. Its impact is negligible outside of North America.

Analysing many estimations from various sources, we conclude of around 400 million fans around the globe for this particular sport. But the surprise is, nearly half of the total are counted from the United States and Canada.

It is believed that American football was actually evolved from Rugby in the late 19th century. Mainly, the sport was seen as a club or collegiate sport. Then, in the year of 1920, everything had just changed after the establishment of NFL.

Generally there are two variants of this game. One is the Canadian Football or the Canadian version. And the other one is well known as the Arena League Football. Mostly players are seen to move between these leagues at times.

Some historic teams: the Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steele-rs, San Francisco 49ers

Previously said, most of the teams are from North America. But NFL is arranged every year in England and other countries of Europe via NFL Europe. Recently more and more Australian and African people are getting interested about the game. And still very fewer from the Asia.

The sport is played by two teams of eleven players. The rectangular field is 120 yards long and 53.3 yards wide with goalposts at each end. Surprisingly an oval ball, which is carried on hand is known as the football. And the offense attempts to advance with the ball down the field. There are option of either running with the football or passing it through the posts. The offense must advance it at least ten yards in four downs to receive a new set of four downs. If they fail to continue, they have to turn over the ball to the opposing team.

9. Basketball

Approximated number of fans: 400 million

Regional popularity: America

Basketball developed in America in the late 19th century. Mostly Americans dominated the first century of the sport. Unfortunately the game has slowly spread throughout the world. But still, other countries like Argentina, Lithuania and Australia have developed great talent. They all have become competitive now a days.

Urbanisation of the whole globe has strongly affected its growth everywhere. Probably basketball is one of very few sports that can be played in minimal space. And urban environment is always lacking a little more space. With 400+ million spectators around the globe Basketball is now at 9th in the list of top 10 most popular sports in the world 2018.

Winning MVP title is considered the most precious in the sport Basketball. Top talents from countries like France (Tony Parker), Germany (Dirk Nowitzki), Canada (Steve Nash) and Spain (Pau and Marc Gasol) are building their career in America. While those who are unable to make it into the American National Basketball Association (may be on the down slope of their career) are attracted to the other international leagues.

Some people claim, Basketball as the 3rd most popular sport in the world with 2-3 billion fans from US, China, Canada and Philippine. But please keep that for later proclamation. Now on, I believe we can go through our present conclusion.

Basketball is played on a rectangular court. There are two teams, each consisting of only five players. Both the team’s objective is to shoot a ball through a hoop. The hoop is 18 inches (46 cm) in diameter and 10 feet (3.0 m) high, mounted to a backboard at each end. During regular play, a team can score a field goal by shooting the ball through the basket. Field goal scores two games only for the shooting team. But if the player is outside the three point line and successfully shoots through the hoop, then it is three point counted. And at the end of the game, the team with the most of the points wins.

Approximated number of fans: 450 million

Regional popularity: Europe, Asia, America, Canada

It is believed that golf started at the age of 13th century. But it wasn’t solidified as sport then. In Scotland, the sport was promptly banned by King James 2nd before the early 1400’s. People often say, this sport is possibly the only one where its home of origin is still used as a playing ground, the Old Course at St. Andrews has been used for the last 500 years for golfing.

The nature of competition in this game is very much indirect. May be that is another crucial issue for its potential amount of fans. Unlike all the other sports in the list, opponents are never face to face in contest with each other, which creates a lack of conflict or perceived competitiveness among them. In this very sporting arena American players are mostly dominant.

Some famous American golfers: Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Arnold Palmer

Now a days, a number of Asian countries have begun to catch up.

With more than 450 million fans from Europe, Asia, America and Canada, we can easily keep Golf in our most popular sports in the world wiki list.

Somewhere this sport is known as the Football and somewhere particularly in America it is Soccer. But as we have already stated the Game American Football above, we are using here the term Soccer.

At the prehistoric ages there was a different version of the sport. Just kicking of a ball towards a target. But at the mid-19th century a proper code of rules and regulations was developed in the British Emperor.

The popularity of the game has created an incredibly rabid fan base. Almost every towns are growing their own clubs to call their own pledge allegiance. There is no particular powerful club or International teams. But according to some greater achievements we can declare some as top favorites.

In case of Soccer the field is rectangular with a goal post at each end. The objective of the game is to score goal at opponent’s post. Player can use any part of the body except the arms and hands. Most Famous Sports in the World (Most Watched):

The concept of sports took birth at the ages back around 2000 BC. At that time, probably gymnastics was one of the most popular sports in the world as well as one of the first of its kind. Sports were simple games of endurance and skill in those days. In such prehistoric ages, sports were like some competition for the entertainment of the crowd.

Sometimes games played the role of training grounds too. And we all know, most of these sports had ritualistic meaning to their cultures, some were incredibly violent and deadly. The early Mesoamerican ballgame was one of these kinds.

And now at this very article we will attempt to conclude regarding the most viewed sports around the globe as the most popular sports in the world. We will simply try to determine the number of fans, most definitely which is estimated through participation and media coverage from each corner of this sporting earth. I confess, we are unwillingly relying on the existing data sets to arrive at the most accurate conclusion. But we can still hope that we are getting the result pretty good.

This list is developed after well enough web research, also from some authentic related sites. Almost all of these authors have acknowledged that they have taken into account the population of countries. And mostly depended on general surveys or discussions on the internet world.

List of top 10 most popular sports in the world:

rank Sport Estimated Fans Regional Popularity
1 Soccer / Association Football 3.5 Billion Europe, Africa, Asia, America.
2 Cricket 2.5 Billion Asia, Australia, UK.
3 Field Hockey 2 Billion Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia.

7 Baseball 500 Million America, Japan.
8 Golf 450 Million Europe, Asia, America, Canada.
 9 Basketball 400 Million
10 American Football 400 Million Europe, Africa, Asia, America, Australia.

In terms of fans, Soccer is clearly the most popular sport in the world. We can easily get the idea every four years, when it’s time for FIFA World Cup. Authentic information about the 2006 World Cup Germany, claims that over 30 billion people at that time watched that tournament. definitely this stat has been far changed now a days. Yes off course, I know the count is surprisingly more than the world’s total population. But the technique is presenting the figure as an accumulated audience, which means people are counted each time they watch more than one game.

Most popular sport undoubtedly differs from country to country. Like, there are so many more other sports popular most in so many more other countries, not football. We can also find out that statistics too, for specific sports for specific country. But that’s another deal..

Top 10 Most Valuable Backup Goalkeepers in Soccer

Where goalkeepers are concerned, natural process has almost always been to have one consistent goalkeeper. Also there is another much-less-heralded backup in the event of an injury to the consistent choice. Major football clubs across Europe have been laughing in the face of that natural so called process. They have been buying backup keepers who could easily start for other major clubs to have as a solid backup goalkeepers. This recent stockpiling of goalkeepers that we are trying to make list of the top 10 most valuable backup goalkeepers in soccer 2015.

We can easily figure out the fact by just looking at Chelsea. Being one of the famous and richest clubs in Europe as well as England, Chelsea still have Petr Cech on their list despite the return of Thibaut Courtois. They have taken him after an extremely successful loan spell with Atletico Madrid last season. There’s also the fact that Manchester City recently signed Malaga’s Willy Caballero as backup goalkeeper to support their prior choice Joe Heart.

Barcelona signed both Claudio Bravo and Marc-Andre ter Stegen following the departure of longtime number one goalkeeper Victor Valdes. Who is still available for any club to be found as prime or backup goalkeeper. Real Madrid recently signed Costa Rican goalkeeping hero Keylor Navas to act as backup for Spanish goalkeeping legend Iker Casillas. No doubt, sometimes it feels like the number one goalkeeper of his age is currently on the downswing of his career with the Spanish Giants Real Madrid.

All this to say, backup goalkeepers are becoming a hotter commodity than ever in soccer. It’s becoming increasingly obvious as this transfer window comes to a close.

10 Most Valuable Backup Goalkeepers in Soccer:

These 10 goalkeepers are still worth decent amounts of money despite their status of having to warm the bench. Though they are found more capable of providing a decent challenge to the guy in front.

Here we are discussing and making the list of top 10 most valuable backup goalkeepers in soccer / football world. These ranks are totally based on their market value.

Let’s find, who is the most valuable backup goalkeeper in soccer world?

10. Pepe Reina

Top 10 Most Valuable Backup Goalkeepers in Soccer, Pepe reina
Pepe Reina ; image credit de.wikipedia.org

Present Club: Bayern Munich

Expense: $6.6 million

He was well known for so long as the main man in Liverpool. It’s a little bit strange to see Pepe Reina act as a backup nowadays in Bayern Munich. At 32 years of age, he is probably fitting that would be more accepting of a role as a mentor for Manuel Neuer, who is arguably considered as the best goalkeeper in world football.

With Bayern expected to make a serious run once again for the Champions League trophy this season, it was probably hard for the Spaniard. He is currently considered the number 10th of the list – top 10 most valuable backup goalkeepers in soccer. His current market value is at $6.6 million, which is turned down undoubtedly.

09. Maarten Stekelenburg

 Present Club: Monaco

Expense: $7.3 million

Maarten Stekelenburg is currently on loan at Monaco after Fulham. The Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg is acting as the backup goalkeeper for Les Rouges et Blancs behind Danijel Subasic this season. Surprisingly he is barely entered his 30s and has gained 54 caps for the Dutch national soccer team.

Marten may be several years removed from his best days as a member of Ajax, still has a market value of $7.3 million. Which makes him the 9th most valued backup goalkeeper right now. Stekelenburg still comes with a decent price tag for any team to have.

08. Jack Butland

Top 10 Most Valuable Backup Goalkeepers in Soccer, Jack Butland

Present club: Stoke City

Expense: $7.3 million

Jack has been considered as England’s goalkeeper of the future. Probably that’s the cause behind, Roy Hodgson brought him along for Euro 2012 two years ago. His previous club Birmingham City is proof enough that he’s got plenty of potential as goalkeeper.

However the 21-year-old is likely to play the role of backup to Asmir Begovic at Stoke. Unless the Potters can secure a last-minute loan spell for him. He is currently considered the 8th in the list of top 10 most important backup goalkeepers in the world. His current market value is $7.3 million. And he may not really be content to warm the bench despite his young career. He is being sent on a sixth loan spell may not be something he particularly wants either.

07. Willy Caballero

Top 10 Most Valuable Backup Goalkeepers in Soccer, Willy Caballero

Present Club: Manchester City

Expense: $7.3 million

Willy had a very successful time as the main man at Malaga in La Liga previously. He has been inexplicably snubbed time and time again from the Argentine national team. Willy Caballero’s recent signing with Manchester City means that his chances of playing for his country have decreased a bit. As Joe Heart remains the main guy at the Etihad Stadium, he may only be called upon in case of injury.

Still with $7.3 million market price, Willy is at number 7 in this list of 10 most valuable backup goalkeepers in soccer 2015. It’s uncertain as to how long Caballero will be content to just be the second-string keeper at City.

06. Michael Agazzi

Top 10 Most Valuable Backup Goalkeepers in Soccer, Michael Agazzi
Michael Agazzi ; image credit www.goal.com

Present Club: AC Milan

Expense: $8.8 million

Michael Agazzi is probably the least recognizable name on this list. The Milan backup goalkeeper Michael Agazzi has built up a decent reputation for himself as the main goalkeeper at Cagliari. At Chievo Verona earlier this year then led to him moving to the San Siro. They also signed Diego Lopez from AC Milan Football Club.

The 30-year-old is rated with a market value of $8.8 million. This makes him rank at 6th in the list of most valued backup goalkeepers in soccer world. He may not have much of a chance to compete for time as the number one keeper if Lopez’s performances for the Rossoneri are consistently better. The fact that longtime keeper Christian Abbiati is still on their books surely doesn’t also provoke.

Present club: Tottenham Hotspur

Expense: $8.8 million

Vorm has been capped 15 times by the Dutch national team. He was also chosen as going to the World Cup this past summer as a member of the Oranje’s third place team. Michel Vorm’s recent signing with Tottenham Hotspur may come back to haunt him.

As Hugo Loris firmly entrenched as Spurs’ number one man, also evergreen American goalkeeper Brad Friedel still on their side, Michel Vorm may have a difficult time starting games at White Hart Lane. He is at fifth position considering the backup goalkeepers priority list. The former Swansea City keeper is rated at a market value of $8.8 million. Hopefully he may not stay in Tottenham for a terribly long sessions.

04. David Ospina

David Ospina; image credit commons.wikimedia.org

Present club: Arsenal

Expense: $10.3 million

He has been following a great run by the Colombian national team to the quarterfinals of this summer’s 2014 World Cup, Brazil. Most obviously David Ospina needed to play for a bigger club than Nice in Ligue 1. He had been playing with them after moving overseas in 2008.

Arsenal may not necessarily be the answer for that problem. Although he’s clearly good enough to start for a major club. He will likely have to fight for playing time with the Gunners’ longtime number one Wojciech Szczesny now. With a market value of $10.3 million, Ospina is considered 4th of the most valuable backup goalkeepers in 2015 soccer world. The 25 year old still young goalkeeper need his competition which could potentially be fierce.

03. Claudio Bravo

Present club: Barcelona

Expense: $11.6 million

Claudio Bravo is currently in the starting role for Barcelona FC. As a result of the fact that promising young German keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is out injured for some times. Once ter Stegen returns, Bravo may have to sit a number of games out for the Blaugrana.

He has been playing for the Chilean national team that made it past one of the World Cup’s round. He was the longtime number one for Real Sociedad. Claudio Bravo may not be satisfied to have to be part of a goalkeeping tandem. He is at no. 3 of the 10 most valued backup goalkeepers 2014/2015. At 31 years of age, his market value is $11.6 million, which is still considered fair enough.

02. Keylor Navas

Top 10 Most Valuable Backup Goalkeepers in Soccer, Keylor Navas
Keylor Navas ; image credit en.wikipedia.org

Present club: Real Madrid

Expense: $14.6 million

Navas’ performances for his country at the 2014 World Cup Brazil this summer were nothing short of sensational. Undoubtedly his role in Costa Rica’s run to the quarterfinals was instrumental also. So it was obvious that Keylor Navas would not be content to still be playing for a club like Levante.

The sensational goalkeeper was rewarded with a move to La Liga giants Real Madrid. His market value of $14.6 million shows that he’s good enough to start for many big clubs around Europe. But it’s unknown how often he’ll have to jockey for position with another arguable greatest of our generation. Someday will definitely see him as the number one role at Bernabeu.

01. Petr Cech

Petr Cech ; image credit sk.wikipedia.org

Present club: Chelsea

Expense: $24.9 million

Cech has been linked recently to loan spells at clubs like Paris Saint-Germain. Still he remains on Chelsea’s books. It looks as if he’ll have to settle for a backup role behind young Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Unfortunately if he doesn’t win his place back at Stamford Bridge, Petr Cech will be certain to move elsewhere.

For a time now, he’s still by far the most valuable backup goalkeeper with a market value of almost $25 million. He is also one of the best goalkeepers in recent years and still very much intact even at 32. People believes he has also fallen on the downturn of his career and leading the backup goalkeepers in world soccer.
