Maracanã – Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho – Rio De Janeiro

There are very few sporting arenas in the world that can be rightly claimed as truly historic monuments. Estadio Jornalista Mario Filho, or the Maracana as it is commonly known, with its expansive seating capacity and sublimed architecture, is undoubtedly one of them.

Mário Filho is the official name of the stadium which was given after the honorable Carioca journalist, (brother of Nelson Rodrigues). The popular name of this stadium is procured from the Maracanã River, whose origin is in the jungle-covered hills, crossing different neighborhoods of Rio’s North Zone. The word ‘Maracanã’ is derived from the indigenous Tupi–Guarani which refers to a parrot that inhabited the region.

Once the largest stadium in the planet, housing crowds of up to 200,000 attendances ever seen in the chronicle of the game, the Maracana now has a minimized capacity of 73,531 for Brazil world cup 2014. Still, this remains the country’s biggest football ground. There are in fact only a few stadiums in the world that can match this one.

Initiated on August 2, 1948, with the laying of the cornerstone, 1,500 workers were engaged to construct the stadium. Near around two thousand workers were added in the final months. In spite of having come into use in 1950, the works were properly concluded in 1965.

Jornal da Noite is known as The A Noite newspaper mirrored  the towering sense of pride felt by all the Brazilian citizens at the time:

“Brazil now has the largest and the best stadium in the world. Today we have a truly incredible setting where the total world can admire our sporting splendor and capability.”

Established for the 1950 FIFA World Cup Brazil, the Estadio Jornalista Mario Filho, pledged the venue for that year’s truly unforgettable decider between the host nation and Uruguay, maybe the dramatic most chapter in the history of the competition.

However, Maracana represents an almost impregnable fortress for the Brazilians and has taken on mythical proportions within the realm of South American football.

Some of Brazil’s greatest ever players, Zico, Romario, Garrincha, and, obviously Pele have all graced the sacred ground where devoted crowds of up to 183,000 mean only the very toughest sports admirer survive.

It can be considered as the most evocative and wretched chapters in the stadium’s history came on January 20, 1983, when one of the all-time greats of Brazilian football, Garrincha passed away and his remnant was brought to the stadium. A couple of Thousands of fans were present there to respectfully bid the final farewell to the Idol.

Certainly, the saddest moment in the history of Brazilian football was met by a spectral, haunting silence in the extensive stadium. Media all over the globe entitled the shocking defeat as the Maracanazo, a term which is still used for a visiting team wins at the stadium.

João Havelange, former president of FIFA expatiated like,

“Grown men cried after the game. Some left just before the end, thinking Brazil as champions. But by the time they were at the main gates, their dreams were gone up in smoke,”

Some can still say that Brazil has never actually avenged the defeat, but on July 16, 1989, a goal by Romario was fair enough to beat Uruguay in the final of  Copa America on the same ground.50 years after the legendary Maracanazo, in 2000, the stadium again hosted the final of the first FIFA Club World Cup.

Second most popular tourist attraction of Rio de Janeiro, the Maracana always attracts football fans from all over the world, even at the time of its renovation. Visitors here at Rio can watch unfold the stadium even take a miniature piece of the old stadium away with them as a souvenir.

And after all these unavailing words we can terminate with the great Pele:

“The Maracana is a unique place for all Brazilians, bu for me it is really something else. This is where I scored my very first goal for the Auriverde, against Argentina, and as a matter of fact I also scored my 1000th goal later at this home. Almost 1,700 people have played on that ground and the aura of the place is spectacular.”

European football fans have grown accustomed to watching showpiece matches in England, especially at England’s national stadium (Wembley Stadium). Wembley Stadium had successfully hosted both the 2011 and 2013 Champions League finals. Notably, the famous 90,000 seater stadium also hosts all FA Cup, play-off and League Cup finals there.

England last hosted the European Championships in 1996. In that very competition Germany triumphed on the old Wembley’s hallowed turf. The last international final saw Mexico beat Brazil 2-1 in the gold-medal match at the 2012 London Olympics.

England look set to benefit from this decision. Obviously the country wouldn’t be hosting Euro 2020 matches without Platini’s plans. And the tournament atmosphere may be difficult to develop across the breadth of the continent.

Is Wembley Stadium the Right Choice to stage Euro 2020 Final?

Infrastructure within the country remains primed for international events. Both the football stadia and travel routes worked excellently during the London Olympic. For both the 2006 and 2018 FIFA World Cups, England were among the favorites to win the hosting rights. But, we already know that they have failed to land either of the events.

The Chairman of the Football Association, Grey Dyke confirmed that England will bid for the World Cup once more. He also admits (per Lipton’s report) that it will be difficult to do so while Sepp Blatter remains in charge of FIFA.

“We will bid again for the World Cup at some stage. It is quite hard to see England organizing and winning a World Cup bid at the moment, while Sepp Blatter is the president of FIFA”

He expects that the next time, World Cup decision will be taken each countries voting instead of just the executive panel of FIFA.

Blatter’s willingness to run for his fifth consecutive FIFA presidency ensures England’s hopes of hosting the global competition may be some way off. Hopefully, the Euro 2020 final landing will aid the nation’s hopes again.

Michel Platini‘s grandiose previously planned to deliver a truly continental European competition. But it still remains controversial. ‘Move the tournament away from one host’ decision was taken by the UEFA president, which actually added eight teams to bulk the competition up to 24 nations.

The decision was previously described as ‘television-shaped and politically-driven’ – Henry Winter of The Telegraph.

Euro 2020 Final – Wembley Stadium:

Wembley Stadium is an association football stadium in Wembley Park, London, England. The Stadium was opened in 2007, which was actually built on the site of the earlier Wembley Stadium. The previous famous architecture was demolished in 2003. With around 90,000 seats, the Stadium is considered as the second largest Stadium in Europe.

It was believed that Football has the ability to turn any host nation into an all-encompassing, welcoming party for travelling fans. Probably this is the greatest achievement of football. But now a time with such decision, it definitely become difficult. For now, the month’s play will need to cross a lot more borders.

Even the supporters will face another difficulty. They will need to judge where their countries will be competing. May be we can conclude that the Euro 2020 main event is going to lose its total crowd possibility.

Undoubtedly Wembley Stadium will provide an excellent backdrop for the latter stages of the Euro 2020 tournament. The impressive stadium creates a rapturous atmosphere at its best. Hopefully the host city will allow stars to shine, which is already arguably the most historic footballing stage of them all.

Being positive, we can expect UEFA’s decision as very important to bring the Euro 2020 final to the unparalleled footballing ground, Wembley Stadium, England.

David Beckham looking for football stadium in Miami

David Beckham looking for football stadium in Miami, david beckham, david beckham soccer, david beckham net worth, david beckham retiredRetired English football captain David Beckham is trying for the approval of his proposed 25,000 seat football stadium. He has lobbied Miami lawmakers on Wednesday.

Wearing a tailored dark suit, David Beckham went door-to-door in Miami lawmaker’s offices in downtown. He was quite busy meeting with commissioners and posing for pictures throughout the morning and evening.

Beckham is planning for a futuristic and waterfront stadium near the port. He is intending to house a new Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise in Miami. Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez offered an alternative proposal this week. He wants the location of the stadium to be on another nearby downtown waterfront site, which is currently a boat slip. It would be in between an art museum and the Miami Heat basketball arena.

“If they want to have a piece of property there … they would have to bear the cost of filling the slip in”

Gimenez said. He pegged the cost between $12 million and $18 million and claimed that the land could be worth as much as $50 million.

Outside the county hall on Wednesday, David Beckham told reporters,

“It’s another option. It gives us another location which has come out of the blue. It’s gone from having one great possible location to two. We are very happy.”

David Beckham was never expecting a “smooth ride” getting the stadium approval.

“Investors and I will be putting up a quarter of a billion dollars … we don’t want to bring worries”

Simon Fuller (creator of American Idol) and Bolivian-born billionaire Marcelo Claure are the two partners of David Beckham. This group is the founder of Miami-based Brightstar Corp. they are planning to privately finance the $250 million stadium construction.

Alternative plan of the mayor has already drawn the ire of several critics. Former Miami Mayor Manny Diaz is one of them. He said that the space should become parks and plazas for the tens of thousands of downtown Miami residents. He is also afraid of a national real estate collapse.

Miami has become one of the world’s leading urban centers; let us not purge this gift by building a stadium where it does not belong”

Diaz commented in a widely circulated Wednesday email.
