Unconvincing Manchester United Still Find a Way to Win

Probably this is the way it has to be this season so far.

Old Trafford games don’t actually go this way. Especially games involved Manchester United don’t usually go. May be for this particular season, Manchester United is going to pick up their points this way.

Almost effortlessly, Sir Alex Ferguson made a career out of guiding his team through home games. That time, there were teams turned up at Old Trafford and knowing they had already been beaten.

But not this time for West Ham. The result 2-1 win for Manchester will not tell the whole story, though history book will forget the detail except result.

Sam Allardyce’s team was camped in United’s half for much of the final 40 minutes left. The result doesn’t show that Manchester United’s 19-year-old Patrick McNair (debutant) was forced into a last-ditch clearance and also the event of Wayne Rooney. More notably, history will definitely forget that Kevin Nolan had a goal harshly ruled out for offside.

But the Saturday night Premier League point table showed Louis van Gaal’s team had another three points surely. Unbelievably this was their second win so far for the season. But after the collapse at Leicester six days earlier, these three points were very crucial for the Manchester United squad.

Once again Old Trafford has witnessed the defensive vulnerability of van Gaal’s side. Moreover Rooney was dismissed for a needlessly high challenge on Stewart Downing in the second half.

Surprisingly, Van Gaal forced to field a makeshift back four. But only Rafael was the only one who had made more than four appearances for Manchester United.

Hopefully it shouldn’t be lost in the analysis of another unconvincing United display that they won the game finally. They still found a way to win even with senior center-halves Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling sidelined with injury. With only 10 men after the dismissal they got to find their precious three points.

“After the red card, we had to fight for the victory, and I have said to the lads you have been rewarded today because you fought until the end”

— Van Gaal told ManUnited.com

But it was always a possibility for the team, as their attacking players are of the quality of Angel Di Maria, Robin Van Persie and Radamel Falcao.

Manchester United’s forward line was too good for QPR squad. There were also some nervous moments at the other end. There had been an inexplicable collapse in the final 25 minutes. Again the defense looked shaky for the opponents. Thanks to the forwards- Wayne Rooney, Falcao, Di Maria and Van Persie had already done enough damage in the opening 22 minutes, providing a two-goal lead for the home side.

This kind of situation is not that much ideal for the great Van Gaal. Probably the idea is to score them at one end and keep them out at the other end. MANU is not capable right now. So, it’s vital you score more than your opponent for the time being.

May be for this particular season that’s just the way it needs to be.
